Note: For today’s earthquake (october 14) see here !
We just had another earthquake of long duration at around 12:09 pm (about 15 secs).
It was felt in the Athens area, Ioanian islands and Crete, but was particularly strong in the central and southern peloponese.
First indications point at 6.5 R in the underwater region 60 km south of Kalamata ,close to Methoni, and 225 km south east of Athens (Athinai).
Some light damages were noted at the Koroni high school, and the Harokopi high school. Local water supply in Koroni has also been temporarily disrupted.
The first aftershock occured around 2 pm at 6.4 R.
Metaseismic (aftershocks) activity may continue in the next couple of days and vigilance on behalf of the local municipalities and government at large will be imperative.
Update (february 15 2008) : The government has taken the decision to keep all schools in the Messinia and Arcadia region closed to assess if there is any structural damage that may place the lives of students at risk. In addition there is wide concern regarding how the information flow from the national institute of seismic research and independent seismologists (and the ensuing public disagreements between alleged experts) is making its way to the public resulting in misinformation and unnecessary panic. Basically, local seismologists are in a state of civil war on which prediction models should be applied, and what competences are necessary to make future assesments more trustworthy.
Update February 20 2008 : A number of aftershocks between 5.1 – 5.8 R. Latest one today at 20:27 at 6.1 R in same region as major earthquake. We expect the aftershocks to continue but since they are within the great chasm of Methoni, populated areas are not in any danger.
Update February 21st 2008: There was an 1 second strong quake at around 2:30 AM. Unkown source for the time being. Could be from the Methoni Region as the previous quake, or Mount Parnitha close to Athens…
Update February 22nd 2008: Major aftershock 7.4 R in the undersea region off Methoni. Possible major earthquake around the corner within a month’s time.

The next 48 hours will provide conclusive information.
Stay tuned.
