As I was returning home in my lovely French car, I met at the cross section between Aharnon and Soumeli an old friend, the lovely Vrili Zee.
Look, she said.
W’ell, take the functional nodes , and find a way to make them more powerful and cheaper.
For example, today’s MSS can become something like this.
Today’s HSS , can be realized by something like this.
And the service network and applications layer, well I’ll leave that for later, said Zee.
So if you manage to have a couple of universities doing active research, and if you improve your manufacturing of the functional node (both in hardware, software and interconnection and management ) by using the latest patented board population technologies, then you have indeed guarded your work against commoditization. By following this formula of partnering with universities that are active in research, and using state of the art hardware (example on MSC on a card rather than the old cold iron) and software, then you’re way ahead of the game.
The issue with technology isn’t that it is subject to commoditization. The issue with technology is that companies make their breakthrough with a particular technology and set of patents, which are then used to build there processes and industrial lines, and stick with this particular universe for too long (there are human aspects to this, not just technical since maybe the initial creators of the technology left or where replaced (for one or another reason) and the company relied to long on its cash cow products etc…).
So basically, like the movie sez, any kid in a garage or university can indeed present a better way of doing things.
There are many more.
So find a particular node, or anything that you can do better than the existing offerings, create it and market it, build your company around the technology, and sell it (there’s tons of examples of this).
You just improved the world and made money !!!

Thank God none were, she was such a pretty Vrili Gy after all.
Finally I asked Zee about the Vril – ya (the Vrili race) and decision making.
The Vrili – ya said that her people were strong decision makers except for a particular Vrili (Vrikolaks) that caused a GlataNas (evil public calamity) because this particular An of Pooh Naria (ignorant male) ping ponged decisions and hid behind red tape and processes, and was quickly expelled from Vrilya and sent up to our world (where else??).

Portrait of Vrikolakas (translation : he who sucks up to the Vri)
Vrikolakas should not to be confused with the other Janus, named Monica, who bubbles its way to the top and then poof! Bursts..
Note in point: Employee motivation must be high in any succesfull company. So you can’t have Mrs. Psychus

or Mr. Compelling

running the show !
