A Breath of Eastern Wind

In Technology and Business on November 24, 2008 at 12:32 pm

In today’s economic crisis, operation expense reduction (opex reduction) is a must for any company, especially a company addressing the retail domain. As such, any marketing program must include an internet marketing sub-strategy which will also contain elements that focus on viral and mobile viral marketing (including a general anti spam effort).

A site that qualifies for such a marketing program must contain the following ingredients:

  • It must be an attention grabber (Seth Godin’s Purple Cow concept)
  • It must clearly reflect what is being offered
  • It must contain all the necessary information but be easily navigable (you don’t want to get lost in a maze of web pages since the end result is clicking the ubiquitous “x” tab and cancelling the site)
  • And it must easily cater to viral marketing procedures since if you like the site, you will want to communicate it to friends and neighbours, and thus spread “the good word” without your message ending up as spam (this includes the ability to promote the information via mobile communication devices)

Well, the wife was  surfing the net last night looking for some Christmas shopping ideas and she ran across this site:

Lombok  offers a unique concept in home furniture. Their products feature original design, are environmentally friendly, follow sound ethical policies, and offer a complete  mix and match of home furniture solutions that can cater to refined  tastes, all at a reasonable price.

The site design is clean, easily navigable, provides adequate information about the company, its vision and policies, its offerings,   its customer services which is imperative to help reduce buying risk, as well as its pricing and delivery policies to help you properly budget your purchase.

What I find sexy about this site is the ability to zoom in on the product and have a better look. For example, if you’re looking for places to store things (which is what we were surfing for), Lombok offers a  complete assorti of laundry basketsstorage baskets, or log baskets   .All you have to do is navigate to the  product in question, put your mouse on the picture, click the pic, and SHAZAM ! ; you get a zoom of the basket in question.

For example:

  1. Start from the home page
  2. Click on the “Live” Box.
  3. In the left column, click “Baskets and Storage
  4. Select “Jungle string round log basket
  5. Move your mouse pointer on the provided pic (note also for your benefit the complete product info, ordering mechanism, pricing delivery and customer support options on the same page)
  6. See what I mean?

It would’ve been nice if the site included a 360 degree view   for each of the products in question; perhaps a requirement for a future improvement.

What I haven’t tried yet is to see how this looks through a mobile phone since I tend to notify family, friends and associates about things I like through my 3G connection; I travel a lot so mobile broadband communication is a tool I frequently use.

Finally, the Lombok site provides all the necessary information on where to find the products (whether you wanna order them online, or go to one of their many retail stores) as well as the ability to subscribe to their mail catalogue, or their online email newsletter.

A refreshing breath of eastern wind indeed!
